So the 3 kids are gone to university, even my little Cynthia, we are empty nesters. For most of my life as a parent I always seemed to be dropping someone somewhere, to school, to community service, to a friend, to the movies. I thought with the kids in university that would mean long boring nights.

But two things have prevented that from happening. First of all I have always dated my wife Benita and made sure we found time for each other, at least once a week. It didn’t always work that way with my travel schedule when the kids were in primary and high school but we did make the effort.

So as a result we are friends and movie buddies and continue to work on our relationship. Marriage is steady consistent work. Everyday I learn something new about the way my wife views things and just how different we are. So our relationship is anything but boring.

The second thing is I understand even more deeply how involved I am with the All Star community. Its been 16 years and I have taught many kids now from pre-school to University. For example, Nathan, Taryn, Brandon and Tajaro have been with me from age 4 or 5. And they are teenagers now.

When you step on the mat at All- Star, you become my FAMILY. That’s just how it is. This past year I have rejoiced in the accomplishments of so many and wept at the funerals of a few. I am Sensei (which means Teacher), and I’m glad to be a part of your lives.

How to Identify Child Sexual Predators?

Teaching groups how to create safe environments for children to protect against child sexual abuse is the goal of the Virtus program. Virtus was initiated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nassau. Dr. Sonia Lunn and I are coordinators and we are available to speak to any interested group of persons. The first step is to raise awareness about the warning signs of potential molesters. How We Can Take Back OUR Streets

She was young, beautiful, and full of life. Her charm made her very popular in the office with most of those she came in contact with. A valued member of the team, she was well respected by her bosses and colleagues and had a bright career ahead of her. She worked hard and was beginning to climb the corporate ladder.

Then one day she disappeared. Despite valiant efforts by police, family and friends, they could find no trace of her. As time went by all hope of finding her was lost. After some time the only thing that remained was the hope that her body would be found to put her family’s mind at peace.

In many ways this is sad but this true tale represents how much our way of life has changed. I remember as a small boy how my family would pull up on the beach at night to enjoy a chicken snack and just watch the stars. It brought us as a family closer together and made us realize how lucky we were to be living in The Bahamas.

I am now faced with the fear that my children will never experience what I did. Ordinary Bahamians now live in the fear of being a victim of a very violent crime. They face the spectre of being mugged, assaulted or even murderered. And it seems that nothing can be done about it. Predators roam the streets preying on us and on one another.

Bahamians are going missing on a seemingly regular basis. In fact, I would venture to say that there are few Bahamians who do not know personally the victim of a violent crime.

The frustration level is high. The court systems are clogged with pending cases, while alleged felons continue to attack us and our very way of living. The police and government seemed so overwhelmed and unable to cope with the situation.

It is common for us, ordinary Bahamians, to vent frustrations and outrage at the government and society in general. We are now demanding solutions, from harsher jail terms to the death penalty. We cry out as our families and friends must cope with tragedies that years ago were a rare phenomenon in our land.

My point of view is that we can take back our streets and take back our nights. But I don’t believe that any government alone has the ability to do it for us. What I intend to examine over the next few articles are personal strategies that you can use to protect yourself from violent crime.

Perhaps you are wondering who I am and what qualifies me to give you these strategies. I am a son of The Bahamas, who after high school ventured into the United States for further education. There I met a combat master, an individual who had dedicated himself to helping people free themselves from the terror that violent crime causes in peoples lives.

I learned how victims are selected, tested and physically assaulted. Then I learned how to break the various patterns. My training was both physical and mental. Most importantly, I learned how to teach these skills to ordinary people.

This art of teaching I have refined over the past twenty years. My books and videos are used in over thirty different countries, and I have taught seminars and classes to thousands of people, from law enforcement officers to kindergarten kids.

I will leave you with the first lesson that I learned. The self-protection strategies are only an insurance policy; they can lessen your risk and minimize the damage. The bad guys always have a plan. What we are going to develop is your plan.

At least once a week take time for yourself to recharge your batteries, clear your mind, keep healthy and have some contact with other adults.




When it comes to self defense traditional martial arts practiced in a very static position against one attacker. Worse still are those arts that only emphasize sport. How in the world is this supposed to translate to real world self defense.

What this means is even if you are great at the techniques of MMA, BJJ, Judo, Jiujitsu or Aikido, in a real life situation they may not help you if you try them against someone trying to take your life in the manner that they are taught.

You may well ask, “How can you make such a bold statement?” To which I can tell you that I have teacher’s ranks from some of the best authorities in the world in Karate, Judo and Jujitsu and I teach these arts in their separate forms.

The best martial art for real self defense is Miyama Ryu. Why because Miyama Ryu borrows all of the best self defense techniques of each of the arts to teach you how to survive a real street fight. I mean how to win a fight when someone is trying to kill you.

I have received many comments about this video and have taught this concept in a couple of countries. Most of them has been very good and constructive. However, I am widely convinced that many people are separated from reality.

Sparring definitely has its place in the martial arts, but it is drills like this that really determine whether you are combat ready or not.
This is as close to full contact that you can get without padding up and turning it into a kickboxing match, which completely changes the dynamics of the situation.

Tip #1
Anyone can be bullied.

First of all let’s define bullying so we put the right solution
to the right problem.

Bullying has four components to it:
an imbalance of power
threats of further aggression
an intent to harm
the above three points lead to terror

Starting at age 5 kids begin to learn specific skills of
self defense and self confidence.

It’s also usually very early that kids either become bullies,
bystanders or the bullied…

I’ve had to counsel adults and kids in all of these categories.

I can tell you from personal experience being in any of these
categories can be pretty devastating to a kid and more devastating
to an adult.

And I do mean terror. Some kids being bullied will
avoid going to school. Kids will begin to wet their beds,
grades will drop.

Adults will quit their jobs, develop illnesses, take it out
on their spouses and children.

If your kid is a bully, YOU are going to suffer because you
will find yourself in the Principal’s office defending this
kid over and over again or worse at the Police station.

And if you are being bullied you need to understand the
situation is unlikely to get better by itself.

Bullying is often done in secret.

That is why the wrong person sometimes get the blame.
I know of instances where a person has been mentally and
physically tortured by other persons and decided to finally
retaliate violently.

Then the real victim was disciplined by the school for being overly
aggressive in his response to what appeared to be a minor problem.

That is why I do not believe in these zero tolerance policies.

The WHOLE situation must be examined.

I also know of parents who have threatened little kids who are
bullying their kids with violence, because they know that they
are making life a living hell for their child.

I’m not condoning this type of behavior… NEVER. But I do
understand how it could get to this point.

Tip #1
Just TELLING a person to stand up for himself is not enough
to deter bullies and rarely works.
=====

Often times persons can’t stand up. There is something in the
way the bully has set things up that makes the bullied person
feel that he has no power to make a change in this situation.

Remember bullying begins with an imbalance of power. Two against
one, a more accepted social group, a larger kid, etc…. These are
all ways that power manifests itself.

If it starts with an imbalance of power. a successful plan must first
correct the imbalance.

Sometimes it is the bullied person’s emotional and psychological
make up that makes it difficult for them to react to the threat.

Sometimes it is the school or work environment itself, as the bullied kid does
not believe authorities can or will help them. Why? Because previous cries
for help have been ignored or the bully has been allowed to create
this type of perception.

So what should be the first step to correct this imbalance.

Tip #2
Identify what is causing the imbalance of power and move to
shift the power back in the favor of the bullied person.
=====

As a parent, you may have to pick your child up from school at an
earlier time to deny the bully access to your child.

As an adult you may have to transfer to a different department to avoid
the bully.

You might have to enroll your child in self defense classes
to increase his confidence.

I repeat. It is often NOT as simple as saying, “Oh, toughen up kid!”
If you want him to get tougher, you have to give him the tools to be so.

You may have to visit the child’s teacher or visit the bully’s parents.

No matter what the situation, unless there is an imminent physical threat
with no persons of Authority available to step in, direct violence should
be the LAST step in trying to solve the problem and it may only make the
situation worse.

Therefore the kid’s personal plan should begin with what is called VERBAL JUDO.

I’ll talk about verbal Judo and why I think it is a good starting point
in the next article.

A Boy the Bullies Love to Beat Up, Repeatedly

All lank and bone, the boy stands at the corner with his younger sister, waiting for the yellow bus that takes them to their respective schools. He is Billy Wolfe, high school sophomore, struggling.
Moments earlier he left the sanctuary that is his home, passing those framed photographs of himself as a carefree child, back when he was 5. And now he is at the bus stop, wearing a baseball cap, vulnerable at 15.
A car the color of a school bus pulls up with a boy who tells his brother beside him that he’s going to beat up Billy Wolfe. While one records the assault with a cellphone camera, the other walks up to the oblivious Billy and punches him hard enough to leave a fist-size welt on his forehead.
The video shows Billy staggering, then dropping his book bag to fight back, lanky arms flailing. But the screams of his sister stop things cold.
The aggressor heads to school, to show friends the video of his Billy moment, while Billy heads home, again.

It’s not yet 8 in the morning.
Bullying is everywhere, including here in Fayetteville, a city of 60,000 with one of the country’s better school systems. A decade ago a Fayetteville student was mercilessly harassed and beaten for being gay. After a complaint was filed with the Office of Civil Rights, the district adopted procedures to promote tolerance and respect — none of which seems to have been of much comfort to Billy Wolfe.
It remains unclear why Billy became a target at age 12; schoolyard anthropology can be so nuanced. Maybe because he was so tall, or wore glasses then, or has a learning disability that affects his reading comprehension. Or maybe some kids were just bored. Or angry.
Whatever the reason, addressing the bullying of Billy has become a second job for his parents: Curt, a senior data analyst, and Penney, the owner of an office-supply company. They have binders of school records and police reports, along with photos documenting the bruises and black eyes. They are well known to school officials, perhaps even too well known, but they make no apologies for being vigilant. They also reject any suggestion that they should move out of the district because of this.
The many incidents seem to blur together into one protracted assault. When Billy attaches a bully’s name to one beating, his mother corrects him. “That was Benny, sweetie,” she says. “That was in the eighth grade.”
It began years ago when a boy called the house and asked Billy if he wanted to buy a certain sex toy, heh-heh. Billy told his mother, who informed the boy’s mother. The next day the boy showed Billy a list with the names of 20 boys who wanted to beat Billy up.
Ms. Wolfe says she and her husband knew it was coming. She says they tried to warn school officials — and then bam: the prank caller beat up Billy in the bathroom of McNair Middle School.
Not long after, a boy on the school bus pummeled Billy, but somehow Billy was the one suspended, despite his pleas that the bus’s security camera would prove his innocence. Days later, Ms. Wolfe recalls, the principal summoned her, presented a box of tissues, and played the bus video that clearly showed Billy was telling the truth.
Things got worse. At Woodland Junior High School, some boys in a wood shop class goaded a bigger boy into believing that Billy had been talking trash about his mother. Billy, busy building a miniature house, didn’t see it coming: the boy hit him so hard in the left cheek that he briefly lost consciousness.
Ms. Wolfe remembers the family dentist sewing up the inside of Billy’s cheek, and a school official refusing to call the police, saying it looked like Billy got what he deserved. Most of all, she remembers the sight of her son.
“He kept spitting blood out,” she says, the memory strong enough still to break her voice.
By now Billy feared school. Sometimes he was doubled over with stress, asking his parents why. But it kept on coming.

In ninth grade, a couple of the same boys started a Facebook page called “Every One That Hates Billy Wolfe.” It featured a photograph of Billy’s face superimposed over a likeness of Peter Pan, and provided this description of its purpose: “There is no reason anyone should like billy he’s a little bitch. And a homosexual that NO ONE LIKES.”

Heh-heh.
According to Alan Wilbourn, a spokesman for the school district, the principal notified the parents of the students involved after Ms. Wolfe complained, and the parents — whom he described as “horrified” — took steps to have the page taken down.
Not long afterward, a student in Spanish class punched Billy so hard that when he came to, his braces were caught on the inside of his cheek.
So who is Billy Wolfe? Now 16, he likes the outdoors, racquetball and girls. For whatever reason — bullying, learning disabilities or lack of interest — his grades are poor. Some teachers think he’s a sweet kid; others think he is easily distracted, occasionally disruptive, even disrespectful. He has received a few suspensions for misbehavior, though none for bullying.
Judging by school records, at least one official seems to think Billy contributes to the trouble that swirls around him. For example, Billy and the boy who punched him at the bus stop had exchanged words and shoves a few days earlier.
But Ms. Wolfe scoffs at the notion that her son causes or deserves the beatings he receives. She wonders why Billy is the only one getting beaten up, and why school officials are so reluctant to punish bullies and report assaults to the police.
Mr. Wilbourn said federal law protected the privacy of students, so parents of a bullied child should not assume that disciplinary action had not been taken. He also said it was left to the discretion of staff members to determine if an incident required police notification.
The Wolfes are not satisfied. This month they sued one of the bullies “and other John Does,” and are considering another lawsuit against the Fayetteville School District. Their lawyer, D. Westbrook Doss Jr., said there was neither glee nor much monetary reward in suing teenagers, but a point had to be made: schoolchildren deserve to feel safe.
Billy Wolfe, for example, deserves to open his American history textbook and not find anti-Billy sentiments scrawled across the pages. But there they were, words so hurtful and foul.
The boy did what he could. “I’d put white-out on them,” he says. “And if the page didn’t have stuff to learn, I’d rip it out.”

Abusive Husbands

A woman who said her husband has beaten and abused her for 20 years said she didn’t tell him she would speak at a public meeting Thursday about family violence in the Indo-Canadian community. Speaking in Punjabi and English, she recounted 20 years of punches, slaps and taunts from the man with whom she still lives.

Narinder Rihal, a support worker at Surrey Women’s Centre, said part of the challenge in assisting abused women in any cultural community is their reluctance to seek help from strangers.

“They are discouraged from seeking help from outside the family,” said Rihal. “The family does try to help, but sometimes the family is part of the conflict, they can’t always see what the real core issue is. “They are trained and raised to believe that if there is a problem within the family it should be talked about within the family.” Rihal said women often believe that they can’t seek help from people outside their own culture because they won’t be understood

In Silver Spring Shores, Florida a 38-year-old man was shot and killed late Friday after his wife reportedly shot him to protect herself. The argument pretty much started with the daughter,” said Sue Livoti, sheriff’s office public information officer. When the man’s wife got involved, the physical fight turned deadly.

The physical altercation began early Friday, according to Paula Roberts’ account to police.The couple spent Friday evening with their three children at the Ocala Shrine Club Carnival just a couple of miles away from their home. After they left, Timothy Roberts began to argue with his 16-year-old daughter, Kathryn.Once at the home, he is said to have begun hitting his daughter. After his wife got involved, he began to attack her.”The mother went into the bedroom and told him if he hit her again she would shoot him,” Livoti said. “And he supposedly told her, ‘You don’t have the nerve.’”He moved as if to strike her again and she fired one time, hitting him in the chest. The children ran to a neighbor’s house and called 911

This story is one of two stories about spousal abuse that I will compare. The first story has to do with a cycle of domestic abuse. This woman (who has not been named for privacy reasons), who has been abused by her husband for more than 20 years, finally decided to speak out. She spoke to a large group of women about her abuse. The unfortunate thing about the situation, is that she did not tell her husband, meaning that she is still scared.
It appears that this woman has not realized that she is responsible for her own protection. The line in the sand that she should have drawn is nowhere to be seen. This woman said that she wants any other abused women to whom she may have spoken that day, to come forward so that they will not suffer as she has, yet she sadly still continues to live in fear, with the man who has caused her so much grief.

The story to which I am comparing this, is one in which the wife actually defends herself against a violent husband. Paula Roberts tried to break up an argument that had started between her daughter and her husband Timothy Roberts, when he began hitting the daughter. When Paula Roberts tried to intervene, Timothy Roberts began hitting his wife. She reacted immediately and took her protection into her own hands. Her line had been crossed and she went into the bedroom, warning her husband and giving him the opportunity to back off. She said to him that if he hit her again, she would shoot him. He did not believe her, and moved as if to strike her again. His wife shot him once in the chest.

These two women were in similar situations, but reacted in different manners, leading to one ending the violence, and one in a 20 year long cycle of domestic violence. I do believe that the rules would have been effective for the first woman if she had followed them, because as you can see the woman from the first story continues to live with her abuser, while for Paula Roberts, the rules were effective has she no longer the threat of abuse.

And this was a school that gave third and fourth chances.

Quite frankly I had had enough of his foolishness and
just had him in the office so he would not be a disturbance
until his folks came to pick him up.

Then he said something between sobs that I will remember
for the rest of my life.

“My Daddy gave me a big house and everything I wanted,
but he never spent any time with me.”

I know his Father. He is a good man. He is not an absent
father. He struggles to provide for his family and had worked
a lot of overtime to build a nice home in a great community
and have a nest egg for his family.

Somewhere along the way while he was preparing for a
famine, one occurred in his home. He lost his only son,
to drugs and behavioral problems.
======

If you are working overtime to buy “things” for Christmas, you
are making a grave mistake. If you have rationalized that you
are working overtime to catch up on some bills here are some
bills you may not be aware that you are creating:

1. Extra Grocery – Kids are going to eat you out of house and
home because they don’t have you there to set a disciplined
meal schedule.

2. Doctors bills – all the junk food and overeating that you weren’t
there to control leads to stomach ailments. Don’t believe me
ask any Dr. friend what they deal with during the season.

3. Home repairs – You are not there to stop the fights and the
rolling around on the furniture, etc.

4. Divorce Lawyer – Put that energy into your job instead of your
spouse and don’t be surprised at the many pariahs out there waiting
for you to make this move.

5. Criminal Lawyer – Crime soars at this time. Who are your
kids hanging out with?

6. Drug counsellor – The devil finds work for idle hands. Kids claim
to be bored despite all the “things” they have, and get into areas
they would not if you kept them productively engaged.

7. Diapers – You would be amazed at how young they are starting
and with who. Check out the huge amount of September babies by
unwed teens. Well… you do the math.

Do not fall for the lie that you will tell yourself that you are
doing it for your family.

Little did they realize that one day he would
be the Captain of a national team of one of the
toughest sports in the world. Or that he would
be fully competitive with athletes that had
no disabilities and would represent his country
internationally.

Nathan is now a 15 year old SAC student. He
recently represented the country at the CAC
games in Puerto Rico. He is a former Under 13
Pan Am Bronze Medalist. He will lead the team
as the athlete Captain at the Barbados
International.

The team consists of Nathan Williams 15, Artio
Mcphee 11, Elaina Cuffy 11, Ethan Cuffy 9,
Tajaro Hudson 13, Ashton Forbes 15 and Tajah
Hudson 15.

National coaches will be Mickey Munning and
Albert Lill and the delegation will be headed by
Federation President D’Arcy Rahming.

The team will be accompanied by Referees
David Rahming, Melanie Lobosky and Reno
Culmer who will be beginning the process
for international referee certification.

Anyway, a few years back DJ, my son was a
teenager and he nagged me and nagged me
to buy this game system called a WII (pronounced
We) for Christmas.

So I looked far and wide, the internet, stopped
into Game shops during business trips. But could
not find this game.

Not wanting to disappoint I bought a similarly
priced system, a PS(something or the other).
Then sometime later in the New Year I was
considering purchasing this WII when I was
reading the book “the Psychology of Influence”
and I discovered this little known secret.

Christmas is a big time for the toy business.
Toy makers noticed that there is always a
drop in sales after Christmas. So they
wanted to eliminate this problem.

Here’s the Secret……

Toy companies hype a toy so everyone wants it.
Then they underproduce it knowing that people
like you and I to be consistent with our promises
are going to purchase a gift of similar value and
then later  purchase the hyped Toy also, thus
doubling their profits.

This same thing is being done across other industries
because it works so well:-)
Times are tough, we have to make our monies count.

Over 150 persons participated in the survey, which was non scientific,
but never the less, yielded some interesting results. Survey participants
were asked the question “What type of violent crime attack do you fear?”

Not surprisingly topping the list was being shot. Second on the list was being
stabbed and third was rape. In fact about 12 % of men stated being raped as
their top concern. Being attacked by more than one attacker was also a concern.

I designed an online self defense course around these factors so that anybody
